Tips and Tricks for Curly Hair
1. Go for a Perfect Shower
Curly hair will cause you frizz and so care for curly hair will require extra attention than any other hair type. Shampoo strips the natural oil and conditioner locks-in natural oil. To keep hair healthy, keep the conditioner for at least 15 to 20 minutes so that your curls get a smooth finish.
Try to avoid towel drying and you can go for t-shirt drying because towel can make your hair cuticles rough and this will cause more frizz.
2. SelectIdeal Moisturising Products
Go for protein-based shampoo for your curly hair. Protein-based shampoos will provide volume to your curls and will make it look fuller. Do not shampoo your hair every day rather you should do it after 2/33 days. Once in 10 days apply a menthol shampoo if your curly hair has dandruff.
As curls need moisture we will suggest you using hydrating moisturizer or leave-in conditioner. When selecting sprays or serum we prefer silicone serum or spray and you can also select a finishing spray that enhances shine.
For keeping your curls moisturized you can also use hair masks that will add shine to your hair. Protein packs can soften your waves and make them smooth.
You can also go for hair steaming treatment in the saloon. For homemade hair-steam after a shower, take a towel and soak it in warm water. Squeeze the extra water and wrap your hair with it. Remove it after 20-30 minutes.
3. Method of using Shampoo and Conditioner
When you are doing shampoo in your curly hair, remember that you have to take care of the volume of your curls. Curly hair is basically found in a thick hair type (fine curly hair is rare to get) and so curly hair usually gets rough. Using excessive shampoo can also dry up your hair and make it rougher. We do shampoo hair to make the hair dirt free and dirt usually hides in the scalp. So, while doing shampoo, try to avoid the hair and keep an eye on the scalp. If you do shampoo in your scalp and near your scalp then the dirt will automatically get cleaned and your hair will not get roughened.
On the other hand, while conditioning your hair, you have to keep the product as much away as you can from your scalp. Conditioner smoothens your hair by making your hair soft. If you condition the scalp of your hair then the hair that is close to your scalp will get fragile resulting into hair fall. So keep the hair bouncy, voluminous and soft, avoid conditioner near your scalp.
4. Choose Ideal Hair Styling Products
When choosing curling iron, hot rollers or any other hair styling products, go through the temperature settings. You should only settle on the products that have variable temperature settings because in this way you can select less temperature that can lessen the damage of your curly hair.
When it is about hair dryers, get one that has LOW speed and temperature selection. Always run your dryer in LOW speed because HIGH speed will frizz your hair and ruin the definition of your curls.
While blow drying your hair, first you have to air-dry your to 60% and then you can use hair dryers easily.
5. Section Hair While Using Products
Do you need full coverage of all your hair products? If you do then try to divide your total air into sections to that your applied products can reach even deeper. The sections will depend on the thickness of your hair and this division may vary from 2 sections to about 8 sections.
After dividing every section go for plastic clips so that they can hold your coils out of the way. It will not be very decisive if you try to divide your hair from the front, try dividing the hair from the back portion of your head.
Work on the back portion and apply the product. Ensure that the part is saturated and now move to the next part.
If you try to apply products all over your hair without sectioning then the curls on the top will look defined and the hair underneath will look frizzy.
6. Products on Dry Hair
Applying products may seem very easy but requires practice. Always remember that wet hair can absorb products more than dry hair. We have already said, towel dry is not recommended rather t-shirt dry your hair. T-shirt dry means squeeze your hair with a t-shirt. In this half dry and half wet hair, you have to apply the products so that your hair can lock-in the moisture and softness.
7. One and Done
If you are using a hot tool on your hair, always try to understand that your hair has its own texture. Running again and again over the same strand will not lead you to a perfection rather unknowingly it will cause damage to the hair. Reinforcing the direction or the style of your hair repeatedly can burn your hair. Know the rule that one pass is enough. In place of running the hot tool continuously, get to know the perfect temperature of the hot tool that suits your hair.
8. Combing Hair
Usually, curls have a nature of clumping together. You can go for the comb, Denman brush, paddle brush or your own fingers to de-tangle your hair.
But always try to let the curls take the lead and all you can do is allow the waves to get together. While combing, try to go for brushes that have a wide tooth.
9. Instant Conditioning
You think your curls are looking frizzy before you go out? Is there no time to get a shower and condition you curl? No worries! There is a quick trick to afford you moisturized coils. Take a bowl and put some leave-in conditioner (or any of your hydrating moisturizer) and mix it with some water. Put it into a spray bottle and spray it on your dry coils. The coils will get bouncy and you will get added shine.
10. Night Care for Curly Hair
Try to sleep on a pillowcase which is made of silk because this material is amazingly gentle on your hair cuticles. Unlike the cotton pillowcases, this will not roughen your hair fibers. If you do not like to sleep in a silk pillowcase then you can try covering up all your hair with a silk cloth.
Avoid keeping your hair unwrapped because if you keep them free then they will create frictions in themselves and will get dry out and frizzy when you wake up in the morning.
11. Applying Oil
Oil is a very important element to keep your hair moisturized but keep in mind that as we are talking about curls, gel-like and water-based products will be your best bet to keep frizz at bay. If you do not want to wear the ringlets and want to go free and loose then you can go for some drops of oil as it will not ruin your definition.
Always remember not to apply oil on wet hair as it will straighten up your hair. When your hair is dried up, you can use any type of lightweight and natural oils such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, argan oil or grapeseed oil.
12. Hair Cut and Trims
Your hair usually gets damaged in the end. Shape up your hair every year at least one time and cut down the dead hair ends. If you love short hair then cutting hair will really be fun. But what if you like long hair? Cutting long hair may tear your heart apart. If you are one of them, go for regular trims.
By regular we mean to say trim your hair one time in every 6 weeks to 8 weeks. Cutting hair will help you reduce the damage on your hair ends and will make your hair lively after every trim.
Now that you know all the tips and tricks of getting better curls, you are free to bounce back with the coils. But first, try to love your curls as much you lobe yourself. In this age of straight curls are less loves but never feel less confident because your curls have more volume than any other hair types. To get them more perfect, use hot rollers and they enhance the natural curly nature of your hair and lets you wave shine brighter than diamond.
